Discover Benidorm, Spain: Golden Beaches & Mediterranean Sunshine
I’ll be honest, I wasn’t sure what to expect from Benidorm. But the moment I stepped onto that golden sand, with the Mediterranean stretching out like liquid turquoise, I got it completely.
This is a town that knows what it wants to be: a vibrant coastal escape where the sun shines almost every single day. Two stunning Blue Flag beaches steal the show: Playa de Levante, buzzing with energy, and Playa de Poniente, perfect for sunset strolls.
And that famous Benidorm microclimate? It means you can visit any time and still leave with a tan.
Whether you’re here to party, paddle, or simply pause with a cold drink—Benidorm welcomes you exactly as you are.

Why Benidorm Surprised Me (And Why You’ll Love It Too
I’ll admit it, I didn’t expect Benidorm to be this much fun. By day, it’s golden beaches and lazy café vibes. But when the sun sets? The place ignites. Neon-lit streets, rooftop bars, clubs that pulse till dawn. (Yes, it’s earned that “Manhattan of Spain” nickname.)
But here’s the thing: Benidorm isn’t just a nightlife town. Families love it. Adventurers hike Sierra Helada for jaw-dropping coastal views. Foodies devour crispy churros and fresh paella by the sea.
I’m sharing my favorite Benidorm secrets, from the Balcón del Mediterráneo views to hidden tapas spots only locals know.
Trust me, this city mixes relaxation and thrill like nowhere else. Ready to dive in?

Did You Know?
In the 1950s, Benidorm was a sleepy fishing village. Today, its skyline glitters with modern skyscrapers, many now hotels and apartments with dreamy sea views.
The crown jewel? The 192-meter Intempo is one of Europe’s tallest residential buildings.
Ready to explore? Let’s uncover Benidorm’s must-see attractions.

Best Things to Do and See
1. Visit the Beaches in Benidorm
No trip to Benidorm is complete without exploring its array of stunning beaches. Boasting beaches and a handful of smaller gems, Benidorm lays claim to kilometers of expansive golden sands and inviting crystal-clear waters.
Without a doubt, Benidorm stands out as a top destination for beach enthusiasts on the Costa Blanca, offering some of the most exceptional coastal experiences around.
- Levante Beach( Playa Levante)

Levante Beach is Benidorm’s top destination, just a short walk from the town center. Spanning over 3 kilometers, it offers abundant facilities like deck chairs, seafront restaurants, and a gentle coastline ideal for swimming.
Lifeguard stations ensure safety, while activities such as jet skiing and paragliding cater to thrill-seekers. Perfect for families, the beach is cleaned nightly to maintain its pristine condition.
Charming bars at both ends provide great spots for sundowners. Levante Beach epitomizes the vibrant spirit of Benidorm.
- Poniente Beach (Playa Poniente)

Poniente Beach is Benidorm’s quieter side—golden sand, gentle waves, and a laid-back vibe just steps from town.
Grab a bite at beach bars, cool off in shaded spots, or let the kids loose at the playground. The beach is cleaned nightly, so mornings feel fresh and uncrowded. A scenic promenade connects Poniente to Levante Beach—easy to enjoy both in one day.
- Playa del Mal Pas

I almost walked right past it. Tucked behind the marina, just past Poniente Beach, Mal Pas hides like it doesn’t want to be found. And honestly? That’s exactly why I loved it.
It’s small, just 120 meters of soft sand—with gentle waves and a peaceful vibe that feels made for couples or anyone needing a break from the buzz. The Mirador del Castell overlooks it from above, so you can’t really get lost. But somehow, it still feels like your own private slice of coast.
No crowds. No noise. Just sun, sea, and stillness.
- Cala Almadraba

Let me introduce you to Almadraba Beach—the best spot for snorkeling in Benidorm. Tucked between majestic mountains and bathed in sunshine all day, this pebble cove is a haven for nature lovers.
Locals and snorkelers flock here for its crystal waters, teeming with fish and crustaceans. And yes—while it’s not officially nudist, don’t be surprised if a few folks embrace the raw beauty sans swimsuits.
How to find it: Head east from Playa Levante along the coastal road. Park at the bend, then scramble down the hillside. Voilà, you’ve found Cala Almadraba.
My Pro Tip
Before heading out, remember to wear sturdy shoes for the scramble down the hillside and to bring your snorkeling gear to enjoy the vibrant underwater world fully. For the best experience, visit during the morning when the waters are calm, and you can have this slice of paradise mostly for yourself.
- Playa del Albir

Let me tell you about Playa del Albir—a cleanliness haven tucked near the Serra Gelada nature reserve. The water here is remarkably clear, litter practically non-existent. It feels a world away from bustling Benidorm. If you’re up for an adventure, rent a kayak and paddle around the headland. Just watch for sharp rocks and coral when you swim.
The tranquility comes with distance; it’s a scenic 15-minute drive around the headland to reach this peaceful spot, leading you to the charming town of Cap Blanc. Trust me, the journey is worth every minute.

✅ My Local Tip: Don’t Skip L’Alfàs del Pi
Here’s something I’m so glad I did after my morning at Playa del Albir; I drove just a few minutes inland to L’Alfàs del Pi. And wow, what a contrast.
Quiet residential streets. Green viewpoints overlooking the bay. Peaceful parks with water features and mountain views stretching to the sea. It felt like discovering a whole different side of the coast, calm, unhurried, utterly charming.

My advice? Add it to your Albir beach day. Drive inland before heading back, especially late afternoon when the light turns magic over the bay and mountains. You’ll thank yourself.

2. Shop and Explore the Old Town

Benidorm is a surprise for shoppers—I didn’t expect to find such variety tucked between the beaches and high-rises. With over 1,600 shops scattered across town, you’re never far from a good find. Many souvenir spots carry similar treasures, so take your time and pick what speaks to you.
Along the beachfront promenade, you’ll find stalls selling sun hats, sandals, and postcards—perfect for a spontaneous souvenir. But the real magic? That’s in the Old Town.

For a Bigger Splurge
If you’re up for a full shopping day, head to La Marina Shopping Center in nearby Finestrat. It’s got everything: high-street fashion, restaurants, a movie complex, a bowling alley, and even kids’ attractions. Rainy day? Family outing? Evening dinner and a film? La Marina delivers.
Whether you’re hunting for the perfect leather bag, a quiet corner for coffee, or a day of guilt-free retail therapy, Benidorm’s shops and streets are ready to welcome you.
3. Enjoy View from Balcón del Mediterráneo

Two Spots, One Unforgettable View
There are places you visit, and then there are places that stop you mid-sentence. The Balcón del Mediterráneo (Mediterranean Balcony) is the second kind.
Perched right on the coastline, this iconic viewpoint hands you panoramic views of endless blue, the kind that makes you just stand there, breathe deep, and smile for no reason.
Come during golden hour, and you’ll watch the sky melt into shades of pink and gold. Come at night, and the twinkling lights below turn the whole scene into magic.

Right next door, Placa del Castell offers a quieter kind of charm. Swaying palm trees, street musicians filling the air with melody, and the whisper of history beneath your feet—this is where Benidorm’s heart beats. It’s hard to believe a mighty castle once stood here, guarding the sea. Now it’s a lively square where locals and travelers mix, shop, and linger.

✅ My Tips for the Best Experience
- Time it right. Sunset isn’t just nice, it’s unforgettable. The sky explodes in color, and the evening lights add a glow no photo can fully capture.
- Wear comfy shoes. Those charming cobblestones? Beautiful. Heel-friendly? Absolutely not.
- Pause and imagine. Centuries ago, a castle stood watch right where you’re standing. Let that sink in for a moment.
The Balcón and Plaça aren’t just viewpoints, they’re Benidorm’s soul, wrapped in sea breeze and stories.

4. Escape to Benidorm Island

Step into a hidden paradise with a visit to Benidorm Island (Isla de Benidorm). From every beach in the city, you can see it shimmering on the horizon—beckoning, curious, impossible to ignore.
The best part? It’s just a short boat ride from the mainland. Easy to reach, but once you step ashore, it feels a world away from the buzz of the city.
The Benidorm Island Trail winds along the coast, revealing breathtaking views at every turn, crashing waves below, salty air all around, and the endless Mediterranean stretching out like a painting.

For a day of unforgettable fun, pack a picnic, your swimsuit, and snorkeling gear—the underwater world here is surprisingly vibrant, teeming with colorful fish and marine life waiting to be discovered.
Visit early to catch the island at its most serene, or wander off the beaten path to find secluded coves and quiet corners where wildlife roams undisturbed. Whether you’re floating above a hidden reef or eating lunch with nothing but sea views, this little island stays with you long after you’ve left.
📍 Book your Benidorm Island boat trip here
5. Explore The Cross of Benidorm (Cruz de Benidorm)

Perched atop a hill at the edge of Sierra Helada Natural Park, the Cross of Benidorm (La Creu de Benidorm) offers one of the most breathtaking views in the region. From here, you’ll see sandy beaches, rugged mountains, and the endless Mediterranean all stretched out below.
It’s the perfect spot for a quiet escape, a place to breathe, reflect, and watch the city buzz from a peaceful distance. Easily accessible and endlessly rewarding, this vantage point is a must for sunset lovers, photographers, and anyone craving a moment of calm above it all.
✅ The Cross’s Story — A Symbol Born from Scandal
Back in 1961, a wooden cross was raised on this hilltop as a protest against bikinis. At the time, the two-piece swimsuit scandalized a local bishop, who threatened to label Benidorm “El Infierno” (Hell) for allowing such “sinful” attire on its beaches.
Today, the cross stands quietly above a city transformed from a fishing village into a tourist paradise—a strange and wonderful piece of history.

Though the bishop never made good on his threat, locals later carried a massive wooden cross from the Church of San Jaime up the hill, a quiet symbol of tradition watching over a town in transition.
That original cross is gone now. In its place stands a sturdy metal cross, forged in 1975 from fragments of old railway tracks. It’s a fitting monument, really: built from the bones of industry, overlooking a city that reinvented itself completely.
A small reminder that change—and the resistance to it—leaves its mark in unexpected ways.

How to Reach the Cruz de Benidorm (Worth Every Step)
I hiked up from Levante Beach—and yes, my legs felt it. But the moment I reached the top? Worth every step.
The view hits you all at once: Benidorm’s beaches, the Mediterranean, mountains in the distance. I just stood there, sweaty and grinning.
Not a hiker? No problem. Rent an E-bike or grab a taxi—however you get there, just go. Sit with the history, snap your photos, and soak it in. This is the kind of view you’ll remember.

Whether you’re traveling with family, chasing adventure, or simply looking for a different way to spend the afternoon, these activities add a little extra sparkle to any itinerary.
Here are a few of my favorites:
Water Sports

What and Where to Eat

I’ve lost count of my visits to Benidorm, quick escapes, lazy weeks, always returning for the food. Not just the beaches or sunshine, but the way this city feeds your soul, one plate at a time.
Behind the high-rises and tourist buzz, there’s a food scene with real heart. Scratch the surface, and you’ll find family tapas bars, fishermen with the daily catch, and churrerías using recipes passed down for generations.
I’ve done sangria-stained evenings on Calle Santo Domingo, early morning churros in thick chocolate, and paella by the sea that made me close my eyes and breathe.
So trust me: come hungry. Benidorm will take care of the rest.
